CAFEOCCIDENTE is one of two cooperatives in the Nariño Department and has over 1600 members. Including their members, the cooperative purchases coffee from over 9000 producers in the south and west of Nariño. On average 30 million 70kg bags of coffee are produced in Nariño, of these, CAFEOCCIDENTE facilitates the sale of over 6 million bags. Upon delivery to the buying point the parchment undergœs physical analysis, it is then cupped and assessed as to whether it will be put aside for a specialty blend or sold as a micro lot. CAFEOCCIDENTE is one of our favourite cooperatives, they have a proactive and positive approach toward specialty coffee and strongly believe that the production of quality coffee is the answer to sustainable coffee farming. Producers are provided feedback and given advice on better production practices and in addition to financing and social services - the cooperative push for producers of quality to be paid based on a quality pricing structure that omits the NYC commodity market pricing – this makes them a perfect fit for the Nightjar Direct Trade model. In addition to the financial and social services provided by the cooperative the Colombian Coffee Federation work with ‘allies’ and NGO’s to provide producers information, resources and help with education around farm management and self sufficiency.
